The Xenogenesis Trilogy / Lilith's Brood Signed Set Reference

The Xenogenesis trilogy — Dawn (1987), Adulthood Rites (1988), and Imago (1989) — represents Butler’s most sustained and ambitious narrative achievement. All three volumes were published by Warner Books as hardcover first editions, making a matching set visually and bibliographically coherent.

The Set

A complete signed set of the Xenogenesis trilogy in first edition requires three Warner Books hardcovers, all signed by Butler, ideally in fine/fine condition. The trilogy was later reissued as Lilith’s Brood in a single volume (2000, Grand Central Publishing), but the individual first editions are the collectible format.

Set Values

  • Complete signed set, all fine/fine: $1,200–$3,500
  • Complete unsigned set, all fine/fine: $200–$500

The set premium is modest — perhaps 10–20% above the sum of individual volumes — because the trilogy is not yet as heavily collected as the Parable books or Kindred. This represents an opportunity: the Xenogenesis trilogy is Butler’s most intellectually ambitious work, and its market position has room to appreciate.

Assembly Challenges

Dawn is the most difficult volume to find signed in fine condition. The Warner Books hardcovers were not produced to the same quality standard as Doubleday editions, and dust jackets from this era are often found with shelf wear or fading. Patience and condition standards are essential for building a set worth having.
