The War of the End of the World (1981/1984) Signed First Edition Reference

La guerra del fin del mundo (Seix Barral, 1981; English: Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1984, translated by Helen R. Lane) is Vargas Llosa’s historical epic — a retelling of the Canudos rebellion in nineteenth-century Brazil, in which a millenarian religious community defied the newly established Brazilian Republic. The novel is Vargas Llosa’s most sustained engagement with the themes of fanaticism, political violence, and the clash between modernity and tradition.
