The Underworld USA Trilogy Signed Set Reference

The Underworld USA Trilogy — American Tabloid (1995), The Cold Six Thousand (2001), and Blood’s a Rover (2009) — is James Ellroy’s second major series, spanning from the late Eisenhower era through the early Nixon presidency. Where the L.A. Quartet focused on Los Angeles and the LAPD, the Underworld USA Trilogy engages with the entire apparatus of American power: the CIA, the FBI, the Mob, the Teamsters, Vietnam, and the three Kennedy-era assassinations.

Assembling the Signed Set

The Underworld USA Trilogy is significantly easier and less expensive to assemble in signed first editions than the L.A. Quartet. All three volumes were published during Ellroy’s mature fame, when he toured extensively and signed prolifically.

  • American Tabloid: The most valued volume, both for its literary reputation and its position as the opener
  • The Cold Six Thousand: The most stylistically challenging and the most divisive among readers
  • Blood’s a Rover: The conclusion, readily available signed

Set Values

  • Complete signed set, all fine/fine: $300–$800
  • Complete inscribed set: $400–$1,200
  • Individual volumes: See individual title references

The set premium is modest (10–15%) because individual volumes are readily available. The matched set appeals to collectors who value the arc of Ellroy’s historical vision — from JFK’s rise to Nixon’s ascendancy — as a unified achievement.
