Under the Bright Lights (1986) Signed First Edition Reference

Under the Bright Lights was Daniel Woodrell’s debut novel, the first volume of the Bayou trilogy set in the fictional town of St. Bruno, Louisiana. Published by Henry Holt in 1986, the novel introduces detective Rene Shade, who investigates a city councilman’s murder in a community where crime, politics, and family are inextricably entangled.

The Book

The Bayou trilogy shows Woodrell working in a more conventional crime fiction mode than his later Ozark novels. The Louisiana setting, influenced by James Lee Burke and the New Orleans crime fiction tradition, provides a framework for Woodrell to develop his prose style — already vigorous and distinctive, but not yet the honed instrument it would become in Tomato Red and Winter’s Bone.
