The Tor Wolfe Editions Issue Points

Tor Books published the majority of Gene Wolfe’s novels from the mid-1980s through his final works. Identifying true first printings within Tor’s publication history requires attention to the publisher’s edition statement practices.

Tor First Edition Identification

Tor Books uses a number line on the copyright page to indicate printing. The first printing shows a “0” or “1” as the lowest number in the line (the convention changed over the decades). The key principle: the lowest number in the sequence indicates the printing.

Specific Wolfe Points

Book of the Long Sun: All four volumes published by Tor, 1993-1996. First printings identifiable by standard Tor number line.

Book of the Short Sun: Three volumes, 1999-2001. Same identification method.

Standalone novels (2004-2015): The Knight, The Wizard, Pirate Freedom, An Evil Guest, The Sorcerer’s House, Home Fires, The Land Across, A Borrowed Man — all Tor, all identifiable by number line.

Dust Jacket Variations

Later printings sometimes feature additional review quotes or award mentions not present on the true first printing jacket. Some Wolfe dust jackets have been reproduced for later printings with modifications — careful comparison with known first-printing examples is advisable for high-value purchases.

The Book Club Factor

Tor titles occasionally have book club editions that superficially resemble trade editions but differ in binding quality and the absence of price on the dust jacket flap. These are not collectible first editions.
