Gringo viejo (Fondo de Cultura Económica, 1985; English: Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1985, translated by Fuentes himself and Margaret Sayers Peden) fictionalizes the disappearance of American writer Ambrose Bierce, who crossed into Mexico during the Revolution and was never seen again. The novel was Fuentes’s biggest commercial success and the first novel by a Mexican author to appear on the New York Times bestseller list.
