The Lost Get-Back Boogie (1986) Signed First Edition Reference

The Lost Get-Back Boogie has one of the most famous rejection stories in American publishing. Written in the early 1970s, the manuscript was rejected by over one hundred publishers across thirteen years before Louisiana State University Press finally published it in 1986. The novel was then nominated for a Pulitzer Prize — a vindication that Burke has described as one of the defining experiences of his literary life.

The Book

Set in Montana and Louisiana, the novel follows Iry Paret, an ex-convict and musician trying to rebuild his life after release from Angola. The story explores themes of redemption, addiction, and the pull of violence that would become Burke hallmarks. The prose is fully mature — the same lyrical voice that would animate the Robicheaux series the following year.

First Edition Identification

Publisher: Louisiana State University Press, Baton Rouge Publication date: 1986 Format: Hardcover in dust jacket

LSU Press first edition, small printing consistent with a university press literary novel. The Pulitzer nomination boosted awareness but the first printing remained modest.

Signed Copy Market Values

  • Signed first edition, fine/fine: $300–$800
  • Inscribed copies: $400–$1,200
  • Unsigned first edition: $50–$150

The rejection-to-Pulitzer narrative gives this title a romantic appeal that enhances its collectibility. Published just one year before The Neon Rain, it represents the moment when Burke’s fortunes finally turned. Signed copies are scarce, as LSU Press titles rarely generated signing events on the scale of major trade publishers.
