The Enchanters (2023) Signed First Edition Reference

The Enchanters was published by Knopf in 2023, continuing the Freddy Otash narrative from Widespread Panic. Set during the summer of 1962, the novel centers on the death of Marilyn Monroe and Otash’s entanglement with the Kennedys, the Mob, and the FBI. The title refers to the seductive power of celebrity, political power, and sexual allure — the “enchantments” that draw Otash and his world into self-destructive orbits.

The Book

The Marilyn Monroe death provides a compelling historical framework, and Ellroy uses it to explore the convergences of power that defined early-1960s America: the Kennedy White House, J. Edgar Hoover’s FBI, organized crime, and the Hollywood studio system. Otash is the perfect narrator for this material — a man who exists at the intersection of all these worlds, serving and betraying each in turn.
