Stranger in a Strange Land (1961) Signed First Edition Reference

Stranger in a Strange Land is Heinlein’s most famous novel and one of the most culturally influential science fiction books ever published. Published by G.P. Putnam’s Sons in 1961, it follows Valentine Michael Smith, a human raised by Martians who returns to Earth and founds a religion based on Martian philosophy. The novel introduced “grok” to the English language, influenced the counterculture of the 1960s, and won the Hugo Award.

The Book

Heinlein wrote Stranger as a deliberate attempt to break science fiction out of its genre ghetto. The novel’s frank treatment of sexuality, religion, and social organization was shocking in 1961 — Putnam published a significantly cut version, with approximately 60,000 words removed. The “uncut” edition was published posthumously in 1991 by Putnam from Heinlein’s original manuscript. The 1961 abridged edition is the true first edition and the collectible format.
