The Severe PKD Forgery Problem

The Philip K. Dick forgery problem is severe, systematic, and ongoing. By some estimates, the majority of “signed” PKD material on the market is forged. The economics are straightforward: an unsigned Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? first edition might sell for $5,000–$15,000, while a “signed” copy commands $30,000–$100,000 or more. The incentive to forge is enormous, and the difficulty of detection is lower than collectors might hope.

Why PKD Is a Target

Several factors converge to make Dick the most forged science fiction author:

High value differential: The gap between unsigned and signed prices is extreme — often 5x to 10x. This creates a massive incentive for forgery.

Small authentic sample: Dick signed relatively few books. The limited number of verified exemplars makes it harder to build a comprehensive authentication database.

Posthumous fame: Dick’s reputation has grown steadily since his death. Each new film adaptation brings new collectors who may not know the history of forgery in this market.

Paperback originals: Many of Dick’s earliest works were paperback originals. Adding a forged signature to a $500 paperback to create a $5,000 “signed” copy is a particularly attractive proposition.

Known Forgery Patterns

Without naming specific forgers (some cases have been litigated), the patterns include:

  • Professional forgers who produce convincing signatures by studying known exemplars
  • Mass production of forged signatures across multiple PKD titles
  • Insertion of forged signed pages into genuine first editions
  • Fabricated provenance stories to support forged signatures

Protection

The only reliable protection is documented provenance, comparison with verified exemplars, and consultation with established PKD specialists. Authentication services without specific PKD expertise should not be relied upon.
