The Savage Detectives (1998) Signed First Edition Reference

Los detectives salvajes (Anagrama, 1998; English: Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2007, translated by Natasha Wimmer) follows two young poets — Arturo Belano and Ulises Lima — as they search for a vanished avant-garde poet across Mexico and beyond. The novel won the Rómulo Gallegos Prize and established Bolaño as the dominant voice of a new Latin American literature.

Collecting Significance

The Savage Detectives is the key Bolaño title for collectors — his Rómulo Gallegos winner, his breakthrough, the novel that announced a new era. The Spanish first is the true first edition and the one most sought by serious collectors. English firsts, while common, are increasingly collected as Bolaño’s reputation grows.
