The Sandman Signed Editions in Detail

The Sandman is Neil Gaiman’s masterwork in comics — seventy-five issues published by DC/Vertigo (1989–1996) that redefined what comics could achieve as literature. Gaiman has been one of the most generous and prolific signers in the literary world, making signed Sandman material widely available — but the hierarchy of editions and formats creates significant value differentials.

Individual Issues

The seventy-five original issues are the primary collectible format for dedicated Sandman collectors. Key issues:

  • #1 (January 1989): First appearance of Morpheus. Near mint: $100–$300. Signed: $200–$600.
  • #8 (“The Sound of Her Wings”): First appearance of Death. Near mint: $50–$150.
  • #75 (March 1996): Final issue. Near mint: $10–$25.

Collected Trade Paperbacks

Ten collected volumes, beginning with Preludes and Nocturnes (1991). First printings of the trade paperbacks are identifiable by copyright page printing statements. Signed first printing trade paperbacks: $30–$75 each.

Gaiman’s Signing Accessibility

Gaiman has signed at hundreds of events worldwide, making his signature one of the most available in the literary world. The premium for a Gaiman signature is accordingly modest — typically 50–100% above unsigned values. The scarcity premium applies to specific editions (early printings, rare variants) rather than to the signature itself.
