The Sandman Hardcover Hierarchy
The Sandman has been published in multiple hardcover formats, creating a hierarchy of editions for collectors and readers.
The Hierarchy
Standard Hardcovers: DC/Vertigo published hardcover collected editions of the ten story arcs. First printings are modestly collectible.
Absolute Sandman (2006–2012): Five oversized hardcover volumes with new coloring, slipcased. The definitive reading format. First printings of Volume 1: $75–$150. Complete set: $300–$600.
Sandman Omnibus (2013): Two massive hardcover volumes collecting the complete series. An alternative to the Absolute format for readers who prefer fewer, larger volumes.
Sandman 30th Anniversary Editions: Reissued trade paperbacks with new covers and introductions.
Collecting Priority
For pure collectibility: individual first-printing issues > Absolute Edition first printings > standard hardcover first printings > trade paperback first printings. For reading: the Absolute Edition is universally recommended.
Signed copies of any format carry a modest Gaiman premium. The most valuable combination is a signed first-printing individual issue (#1 or #8) in CGC-verified condition.
