Planet News (1968) Signed First Edition Reference

Planet News was published by City Lights Books in 1968, collecting poems written between 1961 and 1967 — a period during which Ginsberg traveled extensively through India, Japan, Cuba, Czechoslovakia, and England, and became increasingly involved in political activism. The collection documents his transformation from Beat poet to global countercultural figure.

The Collection

The poems in Planet News reflect Ginsberg’s expanding geography and political consciousness. The Indian poems document his encounters with Hindu and Buddhist holy men. The European poems record his expulsion from Cuba (where he criticized the Castro government’s treatment of homosexuals) and his triumphant reception in Prague, where he was crowned King of May (Král Majáles) before being expelled by the Czech secret police.

“Wichita Vortex Sutra” is the collection’s centerpiece — a long poem composed on a car trip through Kansas, in which Ginsberg attempts to end the Vietnam War through the power of poetic declaration. The poem’s method — combining news radio, road observations, and prophetic invocation — represented a new synthesis of documentary and visionary modes.
