Parable of the Talents (1998) Signed First Edition Reference
Parable of the Talents is the sequel to Parable of the Sower and won the Nebula Award for Best Novel. Published by Seven Stories Press in 1998, it follows Lauren Olamina’s Earthseed community as it faces the rise of a fundamentalist Christian president whose campaign slogan — “Make America Great Again” — resonated with unsettling precision when it reappeared in American politics nearly two decades later.
The Book
The novel is narrated through multiple voices, including Lauren’s daughter Larkin, who provides a critical perspective on her mother’s visionary leadership. Butler examines the cost of being a prophet — Lauren’s devotion to Earthseed comes at the expense of her family, and the novel does not shy from the damage this causes. The fundamentalist government’s crusade against non-Christian communities, including the enslavement of Earthseed’s members, makes this Butler’s most directly political novel.
