One to Count Cadence (1969) Signed First Edition Reference

One to Count Cadence was James Crumley’s first novel, published by Random House in 1969. It is not a crime novel but a Vietnam-era literary fiction set on a military base in the Philippines, following a group of American soldiers as they drink, fight, and confront the absurdity of their situation. The novel draws on Crumley’s own military service and established him as a serious literary talent before his transition to crime fiction.

The Book

The novel is a barracks story in the tradition of From Here to Eternity and The Naked and the Dead, but inflected with the countercultural sensibility of the late 1960s. The soldiers are not heroic warriors but confused, angry young men adrift in an institution that seems designed to waste their lives. The prose is muscular and assured — Crumley was a natural storyteller from the start.
