Newton Thornburg Signed Firsts: A Reference

Newton Thornburg is one of American crime fiction’s great might-have-beens — a novelist of substantial talent who never achieved the commercial success his work deserved. His masterpiece, Cutter and Bone (1976), is one of the finest American noir novels of the twentieth century, but Thornburg labored in relative obscurity throughout his career, publishing a handful of novels that received strong reviews and poor sales.

The Novels

Thornburg published approximately eight novels between 1966 and 1995, including Gentleman Born, Knockover, Cutter and Bone, Black Angus, Beautiful Kate, Valhalla, A Man’s Game, and Eve’s Men. Cutter and Bone is the clear standout, but Beautiful Kate and Valhalla also have their advocates among crime fiction connoisseurs.

Signing History and Market Values

Thornburg was not a prominent figure in the signing world. His relative obscurity means that signed copies are scarce — not because he was reluctant to sign, but because the opportunities were infrequent. Thornburg died in 2011.

  • Cutter and Bone, signed first: $200–$500
  • Other novels, signed first: $50–$200
  • Unsigned Cutter and Bone first: $40–$100

Thornburg is a collector’s author — known primarily to devotees of literary crime fiction who prize quality over fame. The scarcity of signed copies and the quality of the writing make his books interesting finds.
