Mr. Palomar (1983/1985) Signed First Edition Reference

Palomar (Einaudi, 1983) is Calvino’s last completed novel — a series of meditations narrated by Mr. Palomar, a man who attempts to observe the world with perfect precision. From a wave on the beach to a cheese shop to the night sky, Palomar’s observations dissolve into philosophical inquiry, the impossibility of separating the observer from the observed. The English translation was published by Harcourt Brace Jovanovich in 1985, the year of Calvino’s death.

Mr. Palomar is Calvino’s most introspective and philosophical work — closer to essay than fiction, closer to meditation than narrative. It is the Calvino title most appreciated by readers who value precision of thought over storytelling.
