Lloyd Llewellyn (1989) Signed First Edition Reference
Lloyd Llewellyn is Daniel Clowes’s first solo comic book series, published by Fantagraphics (1986–1987, six issues) with a collected “Special” edition in 1989. The series follows the titular character through retro-futuristic adventures rendered in Clowes’s early, more overtly cartoonish style — heavily influenced by 1950s design aesthetics and the clear-line tradition.
First Edition Identification
The individual issues (#1–6) were published by Fantagraphics in standard comic book format. The 1989 collected edition compiles the series. First printings are identifiable by Fantagraphics copyright page statements.
Significance
Lloyd Llewellyn shows Clowes working through his influences before finding the distinctive voice of Eightball. The series is more stylistically exuberant and less psychologically intense than his mature work, making it a curiosity piece rather than a major collectible. However, its scarcity — most copies were not preserved by collectors — gives surviving copies disproportionate value.
