The Library of America PKD Volumes

The Library of America’s inclusion of Philip K. Dick — three volumes published in 2007-2009, edited by Jonathan Lethem — represents the ultimate validation of Dick’s literary stature. The Library of America, which publishes authoritative editions of America’s most important writers, placed Dick alongside Melville, Faulkner, and Twain — a recognition that would have astonished (and delighted) the author who died in near-poverty in 1982.

The Volumes

The three Library of America volumes collect thirteen Dick novels spanning his career from the 1950s through the 1980s. Jonathan Lethem’s editorial selections and notes provide critical context that has influenced subsequent Dick scholarship.

Collecting Significance

While not first editions, the Library of America volumes serve a different collecting function: they are the canonical texts, the editions that scholars cite and that libraries acquire. Their existence confirms Dick’s place in the American literary canon and supports the long-term value proposition of his first editions. If a writer is important enough for the Library of America, their first editions are worth collecting.

Market Values

Library of America PKD volumes: $25–$75 per volume (retail to modest secondary market). These are not investment vehicles but reference copies that every serious PKD collector should own.
