Identifying the True First (Putnam) of Stranger in a Strange Land
Identifying a true first edition of Stranger in a Strange Land requires distinguishing between several editions and printings. The 1961 Putnam hardcover is the true first edition; all other versions are secondary.
True First Edition Markers
Publisher: G.P. Putnam’s Sons, New York Publication date: 1961 Pages: 408 (the abridged text) Price: $4.95 on front dust jacket flap
The copyright page should show the Putnam imprint without later printing numbers. Putnam first editions from this era typically do not have number lines — look for the absence of “Second Printing” or similar statements.
The 1991 “Uncut” Edition
Putnam published the “original uncut manuscript” in 1991, restoring approximately 60,000 words that had been removed. This is a first edition of the uncut text but is NOT the first edition of the novel. It runs to 525 pages versus the original’s 408 pages. Values are much lower.
Book Club Edition
The Science Fiction Book Club produced an edition that superficially resembles the Putnam first. Key differences:
- No price on the dust jacket flap (or significantly lower price)
- Blind stamp or embossed circle on back board
- Lighter paper stock and thinner binding
- Different dust jacket printing quality
Condition Priorities
The dust jacket is the primary value driver. Fine/fine copies with bright, unfaded jackets command the highest premiums. The 1961 jacket design is susceptible to spine fading and edge wear.
