Identifying a True First of Catch-22 (Simon & Schuster)

Correctly identifying a true first printing of Catch-22 is one of the most financially consequential identification tasks in modern book collecting. The value differential between a signed first printing ($15,000–$40,000) and a signed later printing ($200–$500) is enormous, and the book’s long printing history, multiple editions, and the sheer abundance of later printings make misidentification a real and common risk.

First Printing Points

Publisher: Simon & Schuster, New York Publication date: 1961 Pages: 443 pages Copyright page: The number “1” must be present in the number line on the copyright page. This is the single most important identification point. Binding: Blue cloth boards. The exact shade of blue should be verified against known first-printing copies. Dust jacket price: $5.95 on the front flap Dust jacket design: The first-edition jacket design is distinctive and should be compared against authenticated photographs

Critical Identification Notes

The copyright page number line is the definitive indicator. Later printings show higher numbers as the lowest in the line. Any copy lacking “1” in the number line is NOT a first printing, regardless of other features.

What Is Not a First Printing

Book club editions: Multiple book clubs distributed Catch-22, and these copies are extremely common. Book club copies typically lack a price on the front jacket flap and may have a blind stamp on the rear board. Some book club editions closely resemble the trade edition — always check the number line and the jacket price.

Later Simon & Schuster printings: The book went through numerous printings in the 1960s and beyond. Each subsequent printing is identified by a higher lowest number in the number line.

Dell paperback: The mass-market paperback was the format in which most readers encountered Catch-22. Not a first edition.

Foreign editions: Jonathan Cape (UK) published the first British edition; see the separate reference on US vs. UK firsts.

Verification Protocol

For any copy presented as a signed first printing:

  1. Confirm “1” in the copyright page number line — this is non-negotiable
  2. Verify $5.95 price on the front jacket flap
  3. Check for book club indicators (no blind stamp, price present)
  4. Verify blue cloth binding
  5. Confirm 443 pages
  6. Authenticate the signature through PSA/DNA, JSA, or BAS
  7. Request provenance documentation

The extraordinary financial stakes make thorough verification essential. Never purchase a high-value signed Catch-22 without independent verification of both the printing and the signature.
