Authenticating a Philip K. Dick signature is one of the most critical skills in science fiction collecting. The combination of Dick’s enormous posthumous fame, the high value of his signed material, and the relative obscurity of his actual signing record has created a market saturated with forgeries. A collector who cannot authenticate — or who relies on unreliable third-party authentication — will almost certainly be deceived.
The Dick Signature
Dick’s authentic signature evolved somewhat over his career but maintained consistent characteristics. The “Philip” is typically written with a distinctive capital “P,” and the “Dick” features a characteristic looping “D.” Known exemplars from different periods provide the baseline for comparison.
Red Flags
