Ghost World (1997) Signed First Edition Reference

Ghost World is Daniel Clowes’s most celebrated work and the graphic novel that brought alternative comics to mainstream literary attention. Originally serialized in Eightball #11–18 (1993–1997) and collected by Fantagraphics in 1997, the book follows Enid Coleslaw and Rebecca Doppelmeyer through the summer after high school graduation as they drift apart and confront the emptiness of the suburban landscape they’ve spent years mocking. Terry Zwigoff’s 2001 film adaptation, starring Thora Birch and Scarlett Johansson, expanded the book’s audience enormously.

First Edition Identification

The 1997 Fantagraphics first edition is a trade paperback with a green-tinted cover featuring Enid and Rebecca. First printings are identifiable by the Fantagraphics copyright page — early printings lack the “Now a Major Motion Picture” banner that was added to later editions. The first hardcover edition came later and is less significant bibliographically.

Why This Is the Clowes Trophy

Ghost World occupies the same position in alternative comics that Watchmen holds in superhero comics — the work that proved the medium could achieve the same psychological depth and literary quality as prose fiction. Signed first editions are the apex Clowes collectible because the book’s crossover appeal means demand extends well beyond the alternative comics community.

Signed Copy Market Values

Collecting Context

The 2001 film drove significant demand for early printings. First printings without the movie tie-in cover are preferred by collectors. The book’s cultural penetration — “Enid Coleslaw” has become a recognizable cultural reference — ensures sustained demand across multiple collector demographics.
