The Earthsea Quartet/Quintet Signed Set Reference
The Earthsea cycle spans five novels and one story collection, published over thirty-three years:
- A Wizard of Earthsea (1968) — Parnassus Press
- The Tombs of Atuan (1971) — Atheneum
- The Farthest Shore (1972) — Atheneum
- Tehanu (1990) — Atheneum
- Tales from Earthsea (2001) — Harcourt
- The Other Wind (2001) — Harcourt
The Set’s Complexity
The Earthsea set presents unique challenges because the books span three decades and multiple publishers. The Parnassus Press Wizard of Earthsea is a fundamentally different kind of book from the Harcourt Tales from Earthsea. A “matched set” is impossible — the collector must accept the set’s inherent diversity.
Cost Estimate
A complete signed Earthsea set would cost approximately $7,000–$20,000, with A Wizard of Earthsea accounting for the vast majority:
- A Wizard of Earthsea (Parnassus): $5,000–$15,000
- The Tombs of Atuan: $500–$1,500
- The Farthest Shore: $400–$1,200
- Tehanu through The Other Wind: $50–$200 each
Building Strategy
The Parnassus Wizard is the mountain to climb. The Atheneum Earthsea volumes are scarce but findable. The late Earthsea books are readily available signed. Start with the affordable later titles while hunting for the earlier ones.
