The Dragon in the Sea (1956) Signed First Edition Reference
The Dragon in the Sea (also published as Under Pressure and 21st Century Sub) is Frank Herbert’s debut novel. Published by Doubleday in 1956, it is a submarine thriller set during a future war over oil resources. A four-man crew aboard a subtug must steal oil from enemy wells beneath the ocean, while dealing with the psychological pressure of their mission and the suspicion that one of them is a saboteur.
The Book
Herbert drew on his experience as a journalist covering the Pacific Northwest to create a claustrophobic, psychologically intense narrative. The novel anticipates his later interest in ecology and resource scarcity — oil is the contested resource here, as water (and spice) will be in Dune. The submarine’s confined environment serves as a laboratory for the kind of intense interpersonal dynamics Herbert would later explore on a planetary scale.

As Herbert’s debut, The Dragon in the Sea has the inherent scarcity of a first novel by an unknown writer. Herbert had virtually no signing presence in 1956, making signed copies from the publication era exceptionally rare. Later signatures exist but are uncommon for this title.
