Korrektur (Suhrkamp, 1975; English: Knopf, 1979) is Bernhard’s most formally ambitious novel. Roithamer, a Cambridge-educated Austrian, devotes his life to building a perfect cone-shaped house at the center of a forest for his beloved sister — who dies upon seeing it completed. The narrator reconstructs Roithamer’s thinking from his papers, creating a spiraling meditation on perfection, obsession, and destruction.
