Charles Burns Signed Firsts: A Reference
Charles Burns (born 1955) is the cartoonist whose hyper-precise, ultra-controlled line renders scenes of body horror, sexual anxiety, and suburban dread with the visual clarity of a medical illustration. His masterwork Black Hole (1995–2005) is one of the defining alternative comics of its era. Burns’s drawing style — influenced by Hergé’s clear line filtered through EC Comics horror — is one of the most distinctive in American cartooning.
