CGC Signature Series Guide
CGC (Certified Guaranty Company) Signature Series is the gold standard for authenticated comic book signatures. A CGC SS designation means the signature was applied in the presence of a CGC-authorized witness, eliminating questions of authenticity that plague the signed comics market.
How It Works
- A CGC-authorized witness (usually at a convention or signing event) observes the creator signing the comic.
- The comic is submitted to CGC for grading.
- CGC encapsulates the comic in a tamper-evident case with a yellow label (SS designation) listing the signer(s) and the date of signing.
- The graded comic receives both a condition grade (0.5–10.0) and the SS designation.
Value Impact
CGC SS verification typically adds 20–50% to the value of a signed comic compared to an unverified signature. For key issues — first appearances, death issues, major storyline comics — the premium can be substantially higher because buyers trust the authentication.
Collecting Strategy
CGC SS copies are most valuable for high-value keys where authentication matters most. For lower-value signed comics, the cost of CGC grading ($30–$100+) may exceed the value added by the SS label.
Controversies
The CGC system has faced criticism for its monopoly position, occasional inconsistency in grading, and the phenomenon of “slab culture” — collectors who prioritize encapsulated grades over reading or displaying comics. Despite these criticisms, CGC SS remains the most widely accepted authentication standard.
