The Brian Herbert / Kevin J. Anderson Continuation Books
Since 1999, Brian Herbert (Frank Herbert’s son) and Kevin J. Anderson have published numerous Dune prequels, sequels, and interquels, beginning with Dune: House Atreides. The continuation novels have been commercially successful but critically controversial among longtime Dune readers who question their relationship to Frank Herbert’s vision.
Collecting Status
The continuation novels occupy a fundamentally different position in the collecting market than Frank Herbert’s original six. They are readily available in signed first editions — both authors are active signers — and their values have remained modest. No continuation novel approaches the value of even the least expensive Herbert original.
Key Titles
- Dune: House Atreides (1999) — Bantam. The first continuation novel. Signed firsts: $20–$50.
- Hunters of Dune (2006) — Tor. Based on Frank Herbert’s notes for Dune 7. Signed firsts: $15–$40.
- Sandworms of Dune (2007) — Tor. Conclusion of the original Dune cycle. Signed firsts: $15–$40.
Market Assessment
The continuation novels are unlikely to achieve significant collector value. The supply of signed copies is large, the critical reputation is modest, and the market preference overwhelmingly favors Frank Herbert’s original six novels. Collectors should focus their investment on the originals rather than the continuations.
