The Book of the New Sun Signed Set Reference
A complete signed first edition set of the Book of the New Sun — The Shadow of the Torturer (1980), The Claw of the Conciliator (1981), The Sword of the Lictor (1982), and The Citadel of the Autarch (1983) — is the crown jewel of science fiction collecting. The tetralogy is widely regarded as the greatest science fiction work of the twentieth century, and a signed set represents both literary history and substantial financial value.
The Set
All four volumes were published by Simon & Schuster (under the Timescape imprint for volumes two through four) within a four-year span. The dust jacket designs are complementary but not uniform, reflecting the era’s less coordinated approach to series design. A matched set in uniformly fine condition is challenging to assemble.
Cost Estimate
A complete signed first edition set in fine condition would cost approximately $1,600–$4,500:
- Shadow of the Torturer: $800–$2,500
- Claw of the Conciliator: $300–$800
- Sword of the Lictor: $250–$600
- Citadel of the Autarch: $250–$600
Extended Set
Advanced collectors may extend the set to include The Urth of the New Sun (1987), the coda volume that takes place after the tetralogy and provides additional context for Severian’s story. Some collectors also include the Book of the Long Sun and Book of the Short Sun as parts of the larger Solar Cycle.
Building Strategy
Shadow is by far the scarcest and most expensive volume. Secure it first, then build outward. The middle volumes appear on the market with moderate regularity. Patience and a relationship with dealers specializing in signed science fiction are essential.
