Bloodchild and Other Stories (1995) Signed First Edition Reference
Bloodchild and Other Stories is Butler’s only story collection. Published by Four Walls Eight Windows in 1995 (with an expanded edition from Seven Stories Press in 2005), it contains five stories and two essays, including the title novella “Bloodchild,” which won both the Hugo and Nebula Awards.
The Title Story
“Bloodchild” depicts a relationship between humans and an alien species in which human males serve as hosts for alien larvae. Butler described it as her “pregnant man story” and explicitly rejected readings that interpreted it as a slavery allegory. The story is about the intimate, uncomfortable accommodations required when two radically different species must coexist — a theme that runs through all of Butler’s work.

The collection’s scarcity — small press publication, Butler’s limited signing — combined with the importance of the title story makes this a significant collecting target. The 2005 expanded edition adds “Amnesty” and “The Book of Martha” but is less collectible than the 1995 first.
