Black Hole (2005) Signed First Edition Reference

Black Hole is Charles Burns’s masterwork — twelve issues serialized over a decade (1995–2005) and collected by Pantheon in 2005. Set in 1970s suburban Seattle, the story follows teenagers who contract a sexually transmitted disease called “the bug” that causes grotesque physical mutations. The disease is a metaphor for adolescent transformation, sexual awakening, and the alienation that accompanies both.

First Edition Identification

The 2005 Pantheon hardcover with dust jacket is the definitive collected edition. First printing identifiable by number line. The twelve individual issues (published by Kitchen Sink and Fantagraphics in various formats) constitute the original publication.

Signed Copy Market Values

  • Signed Pantheon first hardcover: $75–$200
  • Signed with Burns drawing: $150–$400
  • Unsigned first hardcover: $20–$50

Burns’s hyper-precise style makes his drawings particularly impressive as remarques — the contrast between the controlled linework and the disturbing imagery is heightened in miniature. Black Hole represents the single most important body horror comic and a landmark in alternative comics storytelling.
