The Acme Novelty Library Issues: A Collector's Reference

The Acme Novelty Library is Chris Ware’s anthology series — twenty issues published by Fantagraphics (1993–2010) that redefined what a comic book could physically be. Each issue is a different size, a different shape, with different cover treatments (die-cut, embossed, foil-stamped). The series serialized Jimmy Corrigan, Rusty Brown, and Building Stories material alongside standalone pieces.

Key Issues

#1 (Winter 1993): First issue, featuring early Ware strips. Near mint: $40–$100. #2–4: Early issues with developing Jimmy Corrigan material. $20–$50 each. #5: Oversized format, Jimmy Corrigan serialization. $15–$40. #7: Giant newspaper-format issue. Extremely difficult to find undamaged. $30–$75. #14: Hardcover format issue. $20–$50. #16: Large-format, Rusty Brown serialization. $15–$40. #18–19: Building Stories serialization. $15–$40. #20: Final issue (2010). $15–$30.

Collecting Challenges

The varying formats make storage and preservation difficult. Issue #7 (newspaper format) is nearly impossible to find in pristine condition. Several issues have been reprinted; first printings are identifiable by copyright page details and Fantagraphics catalog numbers.

Complete Run Values

  • Complete run (unsigned, mixed condition): $300–$800
  • Complete run (near mint): $500–$1,500
  • Signed individual issues: $30–$100+ each

Assembling a complete ANL run in fine condition is one of the most challenging goals in alternative comics collecting.
