Casino Royale First Edition Guide — Identification, Values, and Fleming's First Bond Novel

Ian Fleming’s Casino Royale (1953) introduced James Bond — secret agent 007 — to the world and launched what would become the most successful franchise in entertainment history. Published by Jonathan Cape in London, the first edition had a print run of approximately 4,750 copies. Today, a Fine first edition with its dust jacket is one of the most valuable post-war first editions, regularly selling at auction for six figures.

The Bond Canon

Casino Royale is the first of fourteen Bond novels by Fleming, all published by Jonathan Cape between 1953 and 1966:

  1. Casino Royale (1953)
  2. Live and Let Die (1954)
  3. Moonraker (1955)
  4. Diamonds Are Forever (1956)
  5. From Russia with Love (1957)
  6. Dr No (1958)
  7. Goldfinger (1959)
  8. Thunderball (1961)
  9. The Spy Who Loved Me (1962)
  10. On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1963)
  11. You Only Live Twice (1964)
  12. The Man with the Golden Gun (1965)
  13. Octopussy and The Living Daylights (1966)

Plus two short story collections: For Your Eyes Only (1960) and Octopussy and The Living Daylights (1966).

A complete set of fourteen Cape first editions with dust jackets is one of the major achievements in modern first edition collecting.

The Richard Chopping Jackets

From From Russia with Love (1957) onward, the dust jackets were designed by the artist Richard Chopping. These trompe l’oeil designs — typically featuring a realistic painted object against a plain background — are iconic in book design and highly sought by collectors. The Chopping jacket designs are:

  • From Russia with Love (1957): Rose and pistol
  • Dr No (1958): Girl, spider, and sea
  • Goldfinger (1959): Gold skull
  • And subsequent titles

Collecting Notes

Condition is paramount. The black cloth shows every scuff, and the dust jackets are thin and prone to damage. Finding any Bond first edition in Fine condition with a Fine jacket is difficult.

The complete set. Values for individual Bond titles vary. Casino Royale is the most valuable; later titles generally decrease in value (with exceptions for particularly desirable titles like Goldfinger and From Russia with Love).

Book club editions exist for many Bond titles. Check for the standard indicators.

The films. Bond film release dates often create temporary spikes in first edition demand and prices.

Facsimile jackets. Given the extraordinary values of jacketed Bond first editions, reproduction jackets exist. Authenticate carefully.
