How to Identify a Jonathan Cape First Edition

Jonathan Cape Ltd is one of the most significant British publishing houses of the twentieth century and a cornerstone for collectors of modern literary first editions. Cape published Ian Fleming’s James Bond novels, the UK first editions of Ernest Hemingway, and major works by Salman Rushdie, Ian McEwan, Bruce Chatwin, and many others. For collectors, Cape first editions are often the true first editions for British authors, and important UK first editions for American writers.

Company History

1921: Founded by Jonathan Cape and George Wren Howard in London’s Bedford Square (later Bloomsbury).

1920s–1960s: Became one of the most prestigious literary publishers in Britain, known for quality production and a distinguished author list. Cape published T.E. Lawrence (Seven Pillars of Wisdom), Robert Graves, and many others.

1953–1966: Published all fourteen of Ian Fleming’s James Bond novels — the most important single author/publisher relationship in modern collecting.

1987: Merged with Chatto & Windus and The Hogarth Press.

Present: An imprint of Penguin Random House UK.

First Edition Identification

The Standard Method

Cape first editions are identified by the statement:

“First published [year]”

on the copyright page, with no additional reprint statements below it.

For example: First published 1953 by Jonathan Cape Limited

If additional reprint lines appear: First published 1953 Reprinted 1954

— this is a later printing.

Key Details

“First published” vs. “First published in Great Britain.” If the copyright page reads “First published in Great Britain,” this indicates a book first published elsewhere (usually the US). The Cape edition is the UK first edition, not the true first.

No number lines. Unlike many American publishers, Cape did not use number lines until late in the twentieth century. The text statement is the primary identifier for most collectible Cape titles.

Ian Fleming’s Bond Novels

The Cape first editions of the Bond novels (1953–1966) are among the most collected and valuable modern first editions in the world. Key identification:

  • Casino Royale (1953): First edition has no reprint lines. First state binding is black cloth with a red heart on the front cover. Print run was approximately 4,750 copies.
  • Live and Let Die (1954): First edition states “First published 1954.” First binding is black cloth.
  • Moonraker (1955): “First published 1955.” First binding is black cloth.
  • All subsequent Bond titles follow the same pattern: “First published [year]” with no reprint lines.

Fleming’s Bond dust jackets, designed by Richard Chopping (from From Russia with Love onward), are essential for collector value. Jacketed copies in Fine condition command extraordinary premiums.

Other Notable Cape First Editions

Ernest Hemingway (UK firsts):

  • A Farewell to Arms (1929)
  • For Whom the Bell Tolls (1941)
  • The Old Man and the Sea (1952)

Salman Rushdie:

  • Midnight’s Children (1981) — Booker Prize winner
  • The Satanic Verses (1988)

Ian McEwan:

  • First Love, Last Rites (1975) — McEwan’s debut
  • Atonement (2001)

Bruce Chatwin:

  • In Patagonia (1977)
  • The Songlines (1987)

Common Pitfalls

UK first vs. true first. Always check whether the book was published simultaneously or earlier in another country. “First published in Great Britain” means someone else published it first.

Book club editions. Many Cape titles were issued by UK book clubs. Check for club markings, different binding, or the absence of a price on the jacket.

Jacket condition. Cape dust jackets, particularly from the 1950s and 1960s, were often printed on thin paper and are prone to damage. The presence and condition of the jacket is the single largest determinant of value for most Cape first editions.
