Ulysses, First Edition, No. 143/750 — Shakespeare and Company, 1922
A superlative copy of the Shakespeare and Company first edition, Issue 3 (No. 143 of 750 on handmade paper), in the original blue printed wrappers — unrestored, with the spine intact and the title in white on the upper cover retaining its full brilliance. The errata leaf and cancel leaves at chapters 6 and 17 are present and in correct state.
Provenance
The copy was purchased by Henry R. Tatlock at Goodspeed’s Book Shop, Boston, in 1932, with the original receipt retained. It passed by descent through the Tatlock family — to Margaret Tatlock Hayes in 1968, and to her son Edward Hayes of Brookline in 2003. The family retained the book in a custom slipcase and archival conditions throughout.
Authentication
Examined under raking light and ultraviolet at Ravelstein’s London premises between 22 March and 9 April 2026. Paper consistent with Darantière exemplars; cancel leaves in correct state; errata leaf integral. No restoration detected.
