Turtle Diary

Russell Hoban · Jonathan Cape · 1975

Turtle Diary was published by Jonathan Cape in 1975, adapted into a 1985 film starring Glenda Jackson and Ben Kingsley (screenplay by Harold Pinter). The novel is one of Hoban’s most accessible and emotionally affecting works — a small, precise book about large, inarticulate longings.

William G. narrates in alternating chapters with Neaera H.: he is a failed novelist working in a bookshop; she is a successful illustrator of children’s books who feels fraudulent. Both, independently, become obsessed with the sea turtles in the London Zoo aquarium — creatures that should be swimming thousands of miles through open ocean but are confined to a tank, swimming in circles. The turtles become symbols (but Hoban never allows them to be merely symbols) of everything wrong with their own lives: confinement, repetition, the impossibility of reaching the open water they can sense but not access.

Without knowing each other, both William and Neaera begin visiting the aquarium daily. Eventually they meet, recognize their shared obsession, and hatch a plan: steal the turtles, drive them to the coast, and release them into the sea. The plan is irrational (the turtles may not survive, the theft is illegal, nothing in their own lives will actually change) — but the irrationality is the point. The act of liberation is meaningful precisely because it serves no practical purpose: it is a gesture of faith in freedom itself.

Hoban’s prose is deceptively simple: short sentences, precise observations, a refusal of literary display that makes every word count.
