Tristram of Lyonesse

Algernon Charles Swinburne · Chatto & Windus · 1882

Tristram of Lyonesse was published by Chatto & Windus in 1882 as the title poem of a collection that also included shorter lyrics. The poem retells the story of Tristram and Iseult — the medieval legend of adulterous love, magic, and death — in heroic couplets across nine sections, totaling over three thousand lines.

Swinburne’s version strips the legend of its Christian moralizing. Where Tennyson’s treatment of Arthurian material in the Idylls of the King used the stories as vehicles for Victorian moral instruction, Swinburne celebrates the lovers’ passion as absolute and self-justifying. Tristram and Iseult are not sinners; they are devotees of a power greater than any social or religious law. Love, in Swinburne’s treatment, is a force as impersonal and irresistible as gravity — and as indifferent to human moral categories.

The verse is extraordinary: Swinburne maintains the heroic couplet across thousands of lines without the monotony that the form typically produces in extended narrative. His variations of rhythm within the couplet, his enjambments, his shifts of pace and texture create a narrative music that sustains interest through what is, by any measure, a very long poem.

The “Prelude” — a meditation on love and fate that opens the poem — is one of Swinburne’s finest passages: dense, musical, philosophically serious, and formally magnificent. It announces the poem’s theme (love as destiny rather than choice) and its method (verse as music rather than argument).
