Total Freedom

Jiddu Krishnamurti · HarperSanFrancisco · 1996

Total Freedom: The Essential Krishnamurti was published by HarperSanFrancisco in 1996, a decade after Krishnamurti’s death. Edited by Mary Cadogan and Ray McCoy, the anthology draws from the full span of his public speaking career — from the early 1930s Ojai talks (given shortly after he dissolved the Order of the Star) through his final talk in Madras in January 1986, weeks before his death.

The anthology’s value lies in demonstrating both the consistency and the development of Krishnamurti’s thought over sixty years. The core perception never changed: that thought creates the thinker, that the observer is the observed, that psychological time is an illusion, that truth cannot be approached through any path. But the precision, the vocabulary, the ability to communicate these perceptions — these developed remarkably, from the somewhat abstract language of the early talks to the diamond clarity of the final decades.

The chronological arrangement reveals something else: how Krishnamurti’s teachings interacted with the changing world. The early talks occur in the shadow of rising fascism; the postwar talks address a world traumatized by atomic weapons; the 1960s talks resonate with countercultural rejection of authority; the 1980s talks confront the ecological crisis and the threat of nuclear annihilation. Through all these contexts, Krishnamurti maintained that external problems could never be solved at the external level — that only a revolution in consciousness could address the root causes of human conflict.
