The Visitor was published by Bantam Press in the UK in 2000 (and as Running Blind by Putnam in the US). The fourth Reacher novel marks a departure: where the first three books were action-driven, The Visitor is primarily a detective story — a locked-room mystery in which the puzzle is as important as the violence.
Women are dying in their homes — found dead in bathtubs filled with army-surplus camouflage paint, without a mark on their bodies, without signs of forced entry or struggle. The victims are all women who filed sexual harassment complaints while serving in the military. The FBI suspects Reacher (who had connections to several victims during his army career), and Agent Julia Lamarr essentially blackmails him into helping solve the case — solve it, or be charged with it.
The puzzle is genuine and fair: how do you kill someone without touching them, in their own home, leaving no evidence? Child builds the mystery methodically, with Reacher’s military knowledge providing the investigative framework — he understands the victims’ psychology (trained soldiers who would not open their doors to strangers), the institutional context (the military’s treatment of harassment complaints), and the logistical requirements of serial killing (travel, surveillance, access).
The solution, when it arrives, is both surprising and inevitable — using military training and psychology in a way that is consistent with everything the reader has been told but has not been led to expect.
