The art criticism is characteristically Berger: never merely formal analysis, never mere appreciation, but always asking what the painting reveals about the conditions of its making and the experience of its subjects. His essay on Caravaggio sees in the painter’s chiaroscuro not a stylistic preference but a theological statement about grace — light arriving in darkness without preparation or deserving. His Courbet essay reads the painter’s materialism as political: a commitment to the physical world so absolute that it constitutes a refusal of ideology.
