The Sense of Beauty

George Santayana · Charles Scribner's Sons · 1896

The Sense of Beauty: Being the Outlines of Aesthetic Theory was published by Charles Scribner’s Sons in 1896, Santayana’s first book, based on the lectures he gave at Harvard on the philosophy of art. He was thirty-two years old, and the book already displayed the characteristic Santayana qualities: philosophical rigor married to literary grace, a naturalistic framework that nevertheless took seriously the human experience it explained away.

Santayana’s central thesis is that beauty is “pleasure regarded as the quality of a thing” — that is, beauty is not a property of objects (as Platonic aesthetics held) but a projection of human feeling onto objects. When we call a sunset beautiful, we are not describing a feature of the sunset but expressing a pleasure we feel and attributing it to the external world. This does not make beauty less real — the pleasure is genuine — but it locates beauty in the relationship between perceiver and perceived rather than in either alone.

The book treats aesthetics as a branch of psychology rather than metaphysics: the question is not “What is beauty?” (a question that presupposes beauty exists as an objective entity) but “Under what conditions do we experience pleasure and project it onto objects?” Santayana examines the conditions of aesthetic pleasure systematically: the materials of beauty (sensory pleasures — color, sound, texture), the form of beauty (structural relations — symmetry, proportion, rhythm), and the expression of beauty (the associations and meanings that objects carry).
