The River War

Winston Churchill · Longmans, Green · 1899

The River War: An Historical Account of the Reconquest of the Soudan was published by Longmans, Green in 1899 in two volumes (a single-volume abridged edition appeared in 1902). Churchill covered Kitchener’s campaign as an officer attached to the 21st Lancers and as a war correspondent. He participated in the charge at Omdurman — one of the last great cavalry actions in British military history — where he shot several Dervish warriors at close range with his Mauser pistol (he could not use a sword because of an old shoulder injury).

The two-volume first edition is Churchill’s most ambitious early work: it covers not just the 1898 campaign but the entire history of the Mahdist revolt from 1881 (General Gordon’s death at Khartoum) through the reconquest. Churchill’s portraits of Kitchener (whom he admired but criticized for desecrating the Mahdi’s tomb) and the Mahdi himself are vivid. His description of the Battle of Omdurman — 50,000 Dervishes attacking a British force of 25,000 — is among the great set-pieces of English military writing.

The abridged 1902 edition removed several passages critical of Kitchener (Churchill had entered Parliament and needed political allies). Collectors prefer the unexpurgated two-volume first.

Churchill’s Sudanese Epic

The River War (1899) is Churchill’s account of the British reconquest of the Sudan, culminating in the Battle of Omdurman (1898), in which Churchill himself participated in one of the last great cavalry charges in British military history. The first edition was published in two volumes with maps and illustrations; Churchill significantly abridged it for a one-volume edition in 1902, removing his most critical passages about Kitchener. The unabridged first edition is the version collectors prize, and it commands among the highest prices of any Churchill work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which edition should collectors seek? The two-volume first edition (Longmans, Green, 1899) is far more valuable than the abridged 1902 single-volume edition. Churchill cut roughly a third of the text for the revision, including passages critical of Lord Kitchener that are historically significant.
