The Republic: Conversations on Fundamentals

Charles Beard · Viking Press · 1943

The Republic: Conversations on Fundamentals was published by Viking Press in 1943, in the middle of the Second World War, and it represents Beard’s attempt to address the fundamental questions of American political life in a form accessible to ordinary citizens. The book takes the form of a series of dialogues — modeled loosely on Plato — between a historian (transparently Beard himself) and two friends, a doctor and a lawyer, who raise questions about democracy, the Constitution, the role of government, and the future of the republic.

The dialogic form allows Beard to present arguments without the scholarly apparatus that made his academic works forbidding to general readers. He discusses the tension between majority rule and minority rights, the proper scope of federal power, the relationship between economic equality and political liberty, and the dangers of both plutocracy and populism. The historian — Beard’s alter ego — does not always have the last word; the dialogues are genuine conversations in which positions are tested, qualified, and sometimes abandoned.

The book was published at a moment when Americans were fighting a war to defend democratic values, and Beard’s reminder that those values were contested, fragile, and in need of continuous reexamination struck a chord. The Republic was widely read in wartime America and remains one of the most accessible introductions to Beard’s political thought.
