The Pie and the Patty-Pan

Beatrix Potter · Frederick Warne & Co. · 1905

The Pie and the Patty-Pan was published by Frederick Warne & Co. in October 1905 in a larger format than the other little books. Duchess, a dog, is invited to tea by Ribby, a cat. The pie will contain mouse. Duchess, horrified, secretly substitutes a pie of veal-and-ham. Confusion follows: Duchess thinks she has swallowed the patty-pan (the small tin support inside a pie) from the wrong pie; the doctor is called; the patty-pan is discovered to be still in Ribby’s oven; embarrassment all round.

The comedy depends on the elaborate social rituals of afternoon tea — invitations, acceptance, preparation, appropriate behavior — which Potter satirizes with delicate precision. The setting is Sawrey village (later Potter’s own home), and the illustrations are among her most architecturally detailed.

The Sawrey Setting

The village in the illustrations is Sawrey — the Lake District village where Potter would buy Hill Top Farm in 1905. The detailed architectural drawings of cottages, gardens, and village streets are recognisable from the real village today, making this one of the most precisely located of all Potter’s tales.

Collecting The Pie and the Patty-Pan

Approximate market values:

  • Fine: $1,500–$4,000
  • Very good: $500–$1,500

Projected values (2026–2036): Steady appreciation. The larger format makes fine copies particularly susceptible to wear, increasing the premium for condition.
