The Naturalist in La Plata

W.H. Hudson · Chapman and Hall · 1892

The Naturalist in La Plata was published by Chapman and Hall in 1892 with illustrations by J. Smit. It is Hudson’s most purely scientific work — a systematic account of the natural history of the Río de la Plata region (the pampas and surrounding areas of Argentina and Uruguay), covering birds, mammals, reptiles, insects, and the ecology of the grassland environment.

But Hudson cannot write without art. Even the most technical passages — the migratory patterns of birds, the behavior of viscachas, the hunting methods of pumas — are rendered with the literary grace and narrative energy of a born storyteller. The book reads not as a catalogue but as a series of vivid encounters: Hudson observing, pursuing, wondering, theorizing. His method is that of the field naturalist rather than the laboratory scientist — patient observation in situ rather than dissection and classification.

The book established Hudson’s reputation as a serious naturalist in England. Darwin (who had corresponded with Hudson) was dead by this time, but Wallace and other prominent naturalists recognized Hudson’s gifts: the combination of precise observation with interpretive intelligence and literary ability was rare. The book remains valuable as a record of the pampas ecology before the transformation wrought by agriculture and urbanization.
