The Mark of the Assassin

Daniel Silva · Villard Books · 1998

The Mark of the Assassin was published by Villard Books in 1998. Michael Osbourne, a CIA counterterrorism analyst, is drawn into the investigation of a Trans-Atlantic Airlines flight shot down by a shoulder-fired missile off the coast of Long Island. The attack is the work of a professional assassin known only by his method — a distinctive kill technique that Osbourne has been tracking across multiple operations. The investigation exposes connections between international arms dealing, political corruption, and intelligence agencies on both sides of the Atlantic.

The novel is Silva’s bridge work — more complex in its geopolitics than The Unlikely Spy but not yet featuring the Gabriel Allon character who would define his career. Michael Osbourne would return in The Marching Season (1999), but Silva abandoned the character after discovering the richer possibilities of Allon.

Before Gabriel Allon

The novel is of primary interest as a transitional work: Silva’s emerging craft is visible — the meticulous research, the atmospheric European settings, the moral complexity — but the character of Michael Osbourne lacks the distinctive dual identity (artist and assassin) that would make Gabriel Allon so memorable. Readers who come to this after the Allon novels may find it competent but comparatively generic.
