The Harder They Come

T.C. Boyle · Ecco · 2015

The Harder They Come was published by Ecco in 2015. Three storylines converge: Sten Stensen, a seventy-year-old Vietnam veteran, kills an intruder in a moment of self-defense that rekindles something violent in him. His son Adam, mentally ill and radicalized by sovereign-citizen ideology, goes off-grid in the forests of Northern California, living by hunting and theft. Sara Hovarty Jennings, a Costa Rican-born woman married to an older man, becomes entangled with Adam’s increasingly dangerous behavior.

The novel is Boyle’s darkest: there is genuine menace in Adam’s descent, and the comedy that characterizes most of Boyle’s work is largely absent. The novel examines American gun culture, the fantasy of frontier independence, and the thin line between principled resistance to government and violent psychosis.

The Sovereign Citizen Movement

Adam’s radicalisation draws on the real sovereign citizen movement — a loose network of Americans who reject government authority, refuse to pay taxes, and sometimes resort to violence. The FBI considers it a domestic terrorism threat. Boyle’s portrayal of Adam is notable for refusing to reduce him to a diagnosis: he is mentally ill, but his ideology has its own internal logic.
