Alex Kincaid hires Archer to find his wife Dolly, who has left him during their honeymoon. The trail leads to Pacific Point (a California college town) and into a network of connections that spans three generations: a murder twenty years ago, a mother’s madness, a father’s disappearance, and a college professor whose death in the present may be connected to all of them.
Macdonald’s structural method is archaeological: Archer digs backward through time, and each layer he uncovers reveals that the present crime is merely the latest eruption of violence whose source lies decades in the past. The family he investigates has been damaged by a single act (a shooting that was ruled self-defense) whose consequences have poisoned every subsequent relationship — parents passing their trauma to children, who pass it to their children, in an inheritance as certain as genetics.
The title refers to the emotional temperature of the world Archer moves through: repressed, defended, frozen.
